  is Professor of Health Technology Assessment at the University of Edinburg
 h\, and is Director of its Medical Statistics Unit. After a first degree in
  Mathematics at Reading University he undertook a computing MSc at Southamp
 ton University. Following a PhD at Liverpool University his subsequent care
 er has been at Edinburgh where clinical trial methodology has been a major 
 interest. He has been a consultant to pharmaceutical companies on numerous 
 clinical trials and has run courses on clinical trials for fifteen years.
