DESCRIPTION:The transition from today's fossil-fuel determined reality to a
n urban future based on renewable power requires new thinking and decision-
making. Yet most cities and urban communities are still planned and managed
as if present crises did not exist: mounting costs of rapid climate change
and inevitable decline of oil\, natural gas and uranium reserves. This lec
ture will outline the global-scale of the urban transformation necessary fo
r cities and towns to be entirely powered by renewable energy.
\n
\nProfess
or Droege is Chair of the World Council for Renewable Energy (Asia Pacific)
and Steering Group member of the Urban Climate Change Research Network. He
is an expert on renewable urban design\, development and infrastructure. H
e directed Solar City\, a research development effort conducted under the a
uspices of the International Energy Agency and holds professorial positions
at the Universities of Newcastle\, Australia and Beijing\, China. He direc
ts Epolis\, a consultancy active in sustainable urban change in Australia a
nd internationally\, with a primary focus on China. Droege is author of The
  Renewable City (Wiley\, 2006).
\n
