\nThe Asian elephant is an endangered species that has had an i
 mportant role in the history of Asian civilizations.
\n
\nToday elephants a
 re still important at ceremonial events but they also represent a significa
 nt form of animal agriculture. This is a component of the complex environme
 ntal balance involved in the maintenance of remaining fragmented forests an
 d vulnerable wild elephant populations.
\n
\nLittle is known about the heal
 th\, breeding and genetics of the domesticated elephants\, knowledge that i
 s crucial to maintaining elephant health and wellbeing through early diagno
 sis of disease and genetic exchanges between the small populations that are
  dispersed among the elephant camps and in zoos.
\n
\nThis meeting will out
 line some of the current issues in elephant health and welfare and speakers
  will include experts from Thailand and Sri Lanka.
