DESCRIPTION:A Visible Difference is a unique contribution to the commemorat
ion of the 2007 Bicentenary of the Parliamentary Abolition of the Slave Tra
de in the British Empire. It is an opportunity to broaden current awareness
of the history of the Transatlantic slave trade through the history of med
 icine.
\n
\nThe exhibition explores the forgotten histories of black Afri
cans living with rare skin pigmentation conditions in the 18th and early 19
th centuries. It will encourage us to explore issues of identity\, self-ima
ge and cultural distinctiveness in modern society and examine our own attit
udes and behaviour towards people with a visible difference.
\n
\n
