DESCRIPTION:_The Past Chairman’s Address\, by Dr Jasbir Singh Lota_
\n
\n
Science is our most successful attempt to explain the world in which we liv
 e. It has provided us with a deep understanding of the universe and technol
ogical advances that are now perceived to be essential to our daily lives.

\n
\nIndustry relies on the education system to supply suitable people to
work across a range of disciplines. Are our school leavers and graduates eq
uipped with the necessary skills to contribute to industry\, research and d
 evelopment and business?
\n
\nStudents being enthused to study science req
uires appropriately qualified and experienced teachers. Is our education sy
stem preparing students to study science\, engineering and technology when
 they leave school?
\n
\nDemand for science\, engineering and technical ski
lls is set to expand at the same time as large numbers working professional
s leave the labour market (due to ill health or retirement) meaning the net
  requirement is greater still.
\n
\nA scientifically literate person shoul
d be able to make informed judgements about all areas of scientific debate
that concern them. This may include emerging challenges on a local\, nation
al and global level. If scientists\, engineers and technologists are becomi
ng an endangered species in the UK then who will find solutions to our soci
 ety's challenges?
\n
\n
