Professor Norm MacLeod opens the session and invites you to step into the ancient world of life in the past by looking at twenty-first century cutting-edge research based on our world-class collections. Dr Greg Edgecombe discusses arthropods and the Tree of Life, followed by Dr Zerina Johanson who explores fish fingers – how the fish fin evolved into the hands and feet of four-limbed animals, such as humans. To conclude Professor Adrian Lister takes a look at the woolly mammoth, its evolution, ecology and extinction.

Discover some highlights of the Museum’s scientific research in this series of six evening lectures. Each lecture explores the work of a scientific department with an introduction by the department head, followed by fully illustrated talks from scientists and research staff.
Lectures begin at 19.00 and end at 21.00. Doors open at 18.00 for light refreshments and the chance to view a selection of Museum specimens. Suitable for adults and children aged 14 and over.
