Description

Organiser: Ricardo Morilla

Flow cytometry has been used in Haemato-Oncology for the diagnosis of Leukaemia and lymphoma for the last thirty years. During this period, this complex discipline has played a major part in haematological malignancies classification, diagnosis and prognosis. There is a need to focus on the continuous training of operators and scientists because of the constant evolution of instrumentation, lasers, fluorochromes and applications in the clinical laboratory. The aim of the meeting is to discuss the main aspects of the use of flow cytometry for immunophenotyping. The meeting will be of interest to both people who are new in the field and those with some experience, including scientists, technicians, doctors and trade representatives. The intention is to address topics in a friendly and stimulating educational atmosphere and the popular Flow Quiz is designed to encourage audience participation. Topics such as instrumentation will be discussed by Derek Davies concentrating on lasers and fluorochromes, Steve Couzens will present clinical case reports to illustrate data interpretation and diagnosis in a clinical context. Representatives from the commercial world will be available to talk about their most recent instruments and reagents.

A UK Neqas representative will discuss the new leukaemia diagnosis scheme, Dr. Freeman, from U. of Birmingham Medical School will report on AML minimal residual disease, and Professor Catovsky will discuss new prognostic markers in CLL. Other speakers are still to be confirmed to discuss topics of current interest such as stem cells. It is hoped that this meeting will attract as many interested colleagues as usual, and that we will be able to continue with this instructional meeting and maintain it as an established annual event.

This meeting is accredited by the IBMS and attracts 6 CPD points.
