Description
“Order” – A lecture for sixth form students and their teachers by Mr Alastair Land FLS
All contemporary science, including biology, rests on the extraordinary discoveries made in earlier times. Modern molecular techniques that are so powerful and widely used in biology today must be seen in the context of natural history and the environment. This talks, the second in a series of three devised as a sequence but standing alone, for sixth form students and their teachers, will show:
The treasury of data brought from the voyages both past and present triggered an explosion of intellectual activity that continues today. What are these data? How does diversity arise? How can humans organise the living world around them?
The third lecture in this series, “Inspire”, will take place on 25th September 2008. DVD recordings of all of the lectures in this series are available for a small fee.
Alastair Land has been a biology teacher since leaving university. He holds an avid interest in the natural world as well as the science itself and the history of its study. He is an experienced lecturer and has brought his students to the learned societies of London on many occasions. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society.
