Description
Anorexia nervosa, a serious illness with major physical and psychological morbidity and a poor prognosis, affects about 1% of females between the ages of 15 and 30. Its causation, whilst clearly multifactorial, is poorly understood. This presentation outlines recent research by teams at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Saint George’s University of London and the Institute of Psychiatry into the possible role of neurobiological and neuropsychological factors in its aetiology and maintenance. The clinical implications of this neuroscience model are discussed in the context of a novel approach to treatment.
