Description
High-accuracy radial velocities and stellar masses
RAS Lecture Theatre, Burlington House
Celebrating the work of Prof Roger Griffin, this meeting is devoted to the measurement of accurate stellar masses. It will address masses determined from binary stars, through high-accuracy radial velocities and separations (determined interferometrically or otherwise), as well as systems involving pulsars and the relativistic effects that can be determined from them.
Organizer: Prof. Donald Lynden-Bell (IoA; dlb [ at ] ast.cam.ac.uk)
The evolution of early-type galaxies
Geological Society Lecture Theatre, Burlington House
Our ideas about the evolution of galaxies are developing rapidly as new surveys, instruments and techniques generate new results on early-type galaxies in a range of environments from the highest redshift to the local galaxy population. The meeting will explore the current status and future development of these ideas.
Organizers: Prof. Roger Davies (Oxford; rld [ at ] astro.ox.ac.uk), Prof. Jim Dunlop (ROE; jsd [ at ] roe.ac.uk), Prof. Mike Merrifield (Nottingham; Michael.Merrifield [ at ] nottingham.ac.uk)

Additional information
Specialist Discussion Meetings cover all branches of astrophysics and solid-earth geophysics (including, but not limited to, cosmology, astrobiology, cosmochemistry, astroparticle physics, computational astrophysics; geophysical fluid dynamics, planetary sciences, solar-terrestrial physics).
Admission to the Specialist Discussion Meetings is normally free to RAS members and £15 to non-members (£5 to students), collected on the door, while GSL members may normally attend “G” meetings at no charge. Note that special rates apply for the February BGA meeting. RAS and GSL members should bring their membership cards, and students their student cards, as identification.
Coffee/registration for Specialist Discussion Meetings will commence a half-hour before the formal start time.
