Among 29 countries where human life expectancy is still 50 years or less, 28 are in Africa (the other one is…). An ABC of Africa’s woes might begin with AIDS, biogeography and colonialism. But does Africa have peculiarly many problems, or are there just a few, major causes of persistent and widespread ill health and poverty?
