Description
The telecommunications mast at the corner of Swain’s Lane and Bisham Gardens is a familiar landmark in Highgate, and can be seen from across London. It has a a history of more than 70 years, playing innovative roles in early TV transmissions, a key role in the wartime defence of the country, and later in radio broadcasting. In the last 15 years or so Swain’s Lane has been host to a number of mobile operators base stations.
This small exhibition aims to introduce the technology of mobile phones, and some of the underlying science which is used to determine the strength of mobile signals and how safe mobile base station masts are for local residents.
This exhibition has been arranged by the Science Group at the HLSI , composed of independent members in association with Highgate School.
National Science and Engineering Week (formerly National Science Week) is an opportunity for people of all ages, areas and organisations to take part in science, engineering and technology activities.
National Science and Engineering Week is coordinated by the BA in partnership with the Engineering and Technology Board. It is funded by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
