Description

Professor William J Easson, Professor of Fluid Mechanics, the Univeristy of Edinburgh, presents: ‘Is Blood Thicker Than Water?’ as part fof the Department of Bioengineering’s Seminar Series.

The talk will be divided into 3 parts: a broad perspective on the development of Biomedical Engineering at Edinburgh since the new millennium; a review of advances made in image-guided modelling on our recent EPSRC grant; and challenges for the future of Biomedical Engineering in research and application.

In 2001, after a career as a ‘hard’ engineer – measuring, modelling and simulating for the offshore engineering and power industries, I discovered myself involved in a subject area which I had dropped at age 14, mainly due to an inability to draw plants. A rapid and difficult assimilation of the ‘useful’ biological knowledge followed, and an appreciation of the language barrier between medics and physical scientists. But the fundamental science remained the same. Concurrently, the investment in Biomedical Engineering expanded across the world and Edinburgh University’s interest in this field also grew. As Head of the Institute for Materials and Processes, it fell within my remit to foster the expansion of Biomedical Engineering to become a fully-fledged institute in its own right.
