Description

Many structures, from wings of insects to umbrellas, require changing of geometry. It is carried out either by large deformation, or by activation of internal mechanisms carefully designed either by man or nature. The latter involves precise geometrical compatibility. This becomes extremely challenging if a limited number of simple pieces are used as building blocks of complex shape-changing structures.

Dr You’s research has produced many conceptual designs of deployable structures consisting of simple rods and hinges. They include rings, masts, arches and helices, all of which are scalable by adding or reducing the number of Meccano-like pieces. Their applications include retractable roofs, shelters and expandable medical devices. In this talk, Dr You will demonstrate that the way by which many imaginative and artistically appealing structures are created and can be modelled using basic mathematical tools.

This event is free of charge and will be followed by a drinks reception. To book, please visit www.engineeringclub.org.uk
