Description
The Environment Agency has estimated that 300,000 hectares of land at over 325,000 sites in England and Wales are contaminated with a variety of pollutants. On average 250 new sites have been classified as contaminated each year since 2000. Using landfill alone is no longer a sustainable option. But the remediation and re-use of contaminated and brownfield sites allows this land to be used for essential housing, commercial or environmental development whilst also helping to protect valuable greenfield sites. This one day interactive workshop will consider the negative impact that contaminated land and groundwater is having on the environment, it will introduce novel methods for remediation and incorporate these ideas to address the challenges facing sustainable construction on remediated land. A series of case studies will offer innovative and practical solutions to the risk assessment and treatment of contaminated land and the networking session will promote collaboration between industry and academia.
