Description

The sea crashes into Kew Bridge Steam Museum

Kew Bridge Steam Museum is pleased to announce the launch of a new exhibition, Explore the Sea Floor, opening on 9 January through 2 March 2008. This interactive exhibition dives into the sea-bed and reveals the unusual creatures that live there.

Have you always wondered what lurks beneath the sea? Scientific research is often thought to be rather mysterious with the results shrouded in secrecy. However, a sea-bed mapping project, led by scientists from the National Museum Wales and the British Geological Survey is now revealing its discoveries to all. The teams investigated the sea-bed of the Outer Bristol Channel, a potential source of marine sand for the construction industry, where very little up-to-date information was available on either the sea bed or the life that lives there. The exhibition explores the scientific study and the potential value and future use of natural resources:

Explore:
· Become a marine scientist!
· Meet the animals that live there
· Explore a virtual sea-bed
· Fun activities relevant to the National Curriculum Key Stage 2, 3 and 4

See:
· Enlarged model of a Sand Mason Worm
· Animals of the sea-bed including a sea fan and sea slugs from the British Isles
· Sonar Towfish – research equipment
· A sampling grab – research equipment
· Sediment column (showing different types of sea-bed gravel and sand)

Ernest Buchner, Museum Director said: “This new and exciting exhibition aims to make marine science accessible to all. The content is based directly on the results of the surveys carried out by marine scientists, and is part of the larger environmental issue in England and Wales of conservation of biodiversity balanced with the need to make use of natural resources. Accurate scientific information helps us to make those balanced judgements.”

Also available:
· Visitor operated model of the Boulton & Watt engine
· Water For Life Gallery
· Giant beam and rotative engines in steam at the weekends
· Museum café and shop
· Education facilities and group visits
· Partial wheelchair access and wheelchair accessible toilet
