Description

This presentation will illustrate the representation of the touristic city of Phuket in various application environments. One of this study s latest experiments is built within the internet-based virtual world/game, the Second Life or SL. Representations of real places in virtual environments in which multiple users can explore and interact as in SL, may be more successful means for users to acquire knowledge about real places than the use of static text and graphic representations.

This presentation will focus on the representation of Phuket in the Second Life virtual environment platform. Selected parts of Phuket chosen to showcase particular aspects for tourists are created using textural information, images, video and geographical information. These digital spaces are embedded in an abstract space using a spatial metaphor for organising the information.

The next stage of the project will be to compare, identify and evaluate users’ experiences of this representation. The question that could be asked based on this experiment is: Can this virtual world game become a platform for a real world digital city?

CASA Seminars
During the first and second terms of each academic year, CASA hosts a weekly seminar in which PhD students and Research Fellows present their latest work. They vary in length between half an hour (where there are 2 speakers) to one hour and, because they take place between 5 – 6 pm, they are usually followed by a trip to a local pub. Unless otherwise indicated, all seminars take place in the Basement Lecture Theatre at 1-19 Torrington Place. Unless otherwise specified, there are no restrictions on who can attend. A weekly reminder is emailed each week, if you would like to be added to this email list, please contact Sarah Sheppard.
