Description
This conference is being organised by Sub-Project 2 of the European Thematic Network ACUME2, which focuses on cultural representations of science.
The aim, in keeping with the mission of ACUME2, is to bring together scientists and experts in the humanities, to discuss ‘interfacing sciences, literature and humanities’. The conference will concentrate on debates about the concept of the ‘human’ and the possibilities of its transformation. We envisage contributions that cover any of the following, though other relevant topics are also encouraged:
The history of discourses and representations exploring the nature of the human, whether in scientific and pseudo-scientific writings, popular science, evolutionary theory, anthropology, genetics, fiction, utopian writing, cinema, or the media.
Discourses and representations exploring possible future transformations of humanity, again across a range of forms and media.
One section of the conference will focus on popular science writing, especially the ‘To-day and To-morrow’ book series, inter-war science encyclopaedias, and the (mis)representation of scientific developments in the media.
Another section will focus on representations of science in visual cultures.
