Description
We discuss the extension of Federer-Flemings theory of currents into a purely metric setting. The crucial feature of this theory is that it provides sufficiently strong compactness and closure results for the class of geometrically interesting (integer) rectiable currents. This holds true even if the ambient space is infinite dimensional, and allowed to find minimizing currents as generalized solutions to Plateau’s problem in many situations including a variety of classical Banach spaces. Finally, we discuss recent examples where the existence of minimizers is unknown.
