Description

The 20th century witnessed some extraordinary developments in the fields of science and technology. In the early part of the century, the theory of relativity and quantum physics radically changed our view of science and the universe, through to the digital revolution in the 1980s and 1990s. These innovations have continued into the 21st century, with exploration to Mars, Saturn and Pluto; cloning and stem cell research; .

But new discoveries have brought with them an array of problems and menaces, both in the biological and physical sciences. Climate change, environmental degradation, nuclear war and bio-threats are amongst some of the dangers we face for the future. We may not even need to look any further than human nature itself to explore the impact of these new technologies. Can our developing brains adjust to today’s rapid technological and cultural changes? Is 21st century technology affecting the way we think and feel? The decisions we make in the next few decades will shape the future of life on Earth and beyond.

Join our Director, Baroness Susan Greenfield, author of Tomorrow’s people: how 21st century technology is changing the way we think and feel, and President of the Royal Society, Lord Martin Rees, author of Our Final Century, for this fascinating look at the future.

Martin Rees is President of the Royal Society and also Master of Trinity College, and Professor of Cosmology and Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. He is also Visiting Professor at Leicester University and Imperial College London. He was appointed Astronomer Royal in 1995, and was nominated to the House of Lords in 2005 as a cross-bench peer.
