Description
The Hydrogen Economy is now seen as a potentially important pathway to tackling climate change. Its use offers a means of reducing carbon emissions but the challenges of its manufacture, storage and efficient efficiency into usable energy are not well understood. This is the fourth seminar run by IChemE’s Energy Conversion Technology Subject Group on the topic of hydrogen. The purpose of this latest event is to present the developments that have been taking place for the application and commercialisation of hydrogen as an energy vector. Fuel cells offer very considerable potential for the conversion of hydrogen to electricity if their cost can be reduced by innovative production methods and test facilities. However, the commercial production of hydrogen will remain dependent of fossil fuels for some decades so the production options and the associated opportunities to capture CO2 create demonstration opportunities for UK industry. The capital required to abate global warming requires government stimulus and bankable support is still awaited. The main programme has been structured to update participants but time is being allocated to a panel discussion when views from the floor will be welcomed.
