Additional information
Advances which have taken place in cancer imaging over the last two to three decades, set against a background of progress in the basic understanding and treatment of cancer, have placed imaging at the centre of patient management. These developments, coupled with the relentless increase in incidence of cancer globally, have resulted in ever increasing demands on imaging and ever increasing healthcare costs.
The goal of cancer imaging is to improve patient outcome by providing a uniform high quality service in which information regarding tumour morphology and tumour behaviour is timely, accurate, relevant to patient management and available to everyone with cancer throughout the world. In attempting to reach this goal it is important that strategies for cancer imaging are developed and applied to the management of individual tumour types and that such strategies are continually updated as clinical research is translated into leading edge practice.
Strategies for those countries with limited resources will differ from those countries where new technologies are widely available but it is important to reflect that globalisation of medicine and the dawn of the digital era offer news ways of sharing knowledge, education and healthcare.
Thus as the 21st century unfolds it is hoped that appropriate imaging will become more widely available to patients with cancer everywhere. In this presentation the place of modern imaging techniques in the diagnosis and management of cancer will be reviewed, focussing on their diagnostic and therapeutic impact for screening, staging and monitoring therapeutic response.
