Description

A joint meeting with the United Services Section

Allied personnel serving in or around Arctic Convoys during World War II, whether afloat, ashore or in the air, faced very testing challenges to survival. A casualty treatment chain was established to care for the ill and wounded and, where possible, return them to service or the UK.

Richard Woodman, a distinguished maritime naval historian and author, seafarer and Elder Brother of Trinity House will set the convoy operations in the context of political and military pressures of the time, remark on key associated battles and focus on the crucial role played by the rescue ships.

Against this background, Grant McMillan, President of the Section, drawing on official publications and, predominantly, personal accounts by medical staff, patients and visitors, will discuss arrangements for the receipt, treatment and return of casualties, concentrating on the story of RNAH Vaenga which was opened at the insistence of Churchill in the face of strong opposition from Stalin.
