Description
Vaccines are the most important and cost effective public health intervention available. The complexity of the products, coupled with the multifactoral nature of the immunological response to vaccines, makes rational development of specific vaccines a difficult task. An understanding of the host immune response to natural infection and the mechanisms of existing successful vaccines greatly aids the development of new and improved vaccines. This seminar will address the basic mechanisms of action of the immune response to host defence and vaccine responsiveness. An introduction to vaccines in general, and to the mechanism and action of vaccines will be provided.
