David Waboso FREng is Director of Engineering at London Underground Ltd where he is responsible for assuring the safety and reliability of all engineering assets on the operating railway. In his lecture, David will provide an overview of the engineering challenges on London Underground. This will include the pivotal importance of London Underground to London’s status as a world city, the intensive use of London Underground’s assets set against growing demand, and the particular challenge of implementing major change on such a busy operating environment. He will also cover the “cooling the tube” programme as well as the state-of-the-art train control systems that will be used to drive up capacity on the fixed infrastructure. He will also address the wider strategic issues facing rail, the opportunities it provides for revolutionising transport and economies around the world provides for revolutionising transport and economies around the world and the role of engineering in delivering this.
David has extensive experience of rail engineering projects, having worked on light rail, metro and mainline railways in both public and private sectors. He was project manager for the Dockland Light Railway’s (DLR) moving block resignalling and then moved to the Jubilee Line Extension, where he was instrumental in integrating the different contractors’ systems in time for the Millennium opening. In 1995 he was awarded first prize as UK Project Manager of the Year for his work on DLR’s resignalling. Following his work on the Jubilee Line, David was appointed as Systems Director for the Thameslink Project, and then became Programme Director for the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), leading a cross-industry team of experts in producing the UK Implementation Plan for ERTMS. David joined the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) in 2003 and developed the organisation’s technical strategy, focused on improving performance and controlling costs. He also had responsibility in the SRA for technical harmonisation with Europe, where he represented the UK on the board of the European Rail Agency, and was non-executive director of the Rail Safety and Standards Board, working on system interfaces and a fundamental review of standards. David is a Chartered Engineer and is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Railway Signal Engineers. He has recently been elected as a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering.
