As well as being a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Hammersmith Hospital, Robert Winston was Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London where he led the team pioneering the pre-implantation genetic diagnosis able to identify defects in human embryos. He became a life peer in 1995 and speaks regularly in the House of Lords on education, science and the arts. Until recently he was Chair of the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology.
