Statement
Twenty years from Brundtland; 15 years post-Rio the rhetoric of Sustainable Development has become very familiar but to what extent have the fine words of politicians, business leaders and educators made a difference? Has practice moved on – what has worked and where should our main efforts now be focused? What is the driver? What is happening to make global futures sustainable, not just for human societies but for all organisms sharing Earth’s ecosystem? Many see climate change as the key motivator for sustainable development; energy efficient buildings, carbon neutral lifestyles etc but what of equality, social justice and ethics? But do we need Sustainable Development irrespective of the climate change agenda?
This conference seeks to explore these issues making special reference to practical achievements and change. This will be a strongly interactive event with a mix of invited key-note speakers, delegate papers and posters, workshops, case studies, demonstrations and plenaries and networking opportunities.
