Description
Other speakers include: William van’t Hoff from Institute of Child Health & Great Ormond Street Hospital and Bernd Hoppe from University Children’s Hospital, Cologne.
The scientific/clinical section of this Workshop will carry on the long tradition of PH Workshops and include a range of oral and poster presentations and round table discussions dealing with the latest scientific and clinical advances in hereditary hyperoxaluria and oxalosis. Special, but not exclusive, attention will be given to the following general areas:
(1) Advances in our understanding of the molecular, cellular, metabolic and clinical aetiology of PH1, PH2 and unclassified PH, including genotype-phenotype relationships;
(2) Advances in the diagnosis of PH1 and PH2;
(3) New aspects of translational laboratory research aimed at improving clinical practice, especially treatment.
In addition, it is planned to have a small number of round-table discussions which will explore in depth some of the more controversial topics, such as the relative or potential merits of kidney, liver and hepatocyte transplantation, gene therapy, and the use of pharmacological agents, such as chemical chaperones. In addition, we hope to discuss in detail the variety of in vitro and in vivo approaches to the discovery and clinical implementation of the latter agents.
Although there will be some state-of-the-art overview scientific and clinical presentations, priority will be given to young postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers who will be actively encouraged to present their on-going research. It is hope to offer a number of bursaries to young researchers on a competitive basis to help defray the costs of attending, and contributing to, this Workshop.
Following on from the initiative set by the 7th PH Workshop, we intend to invite two outside speakers, world famous in their respective disciplines of clinical/molecular genetics and protein folding/stability, to provide the field of primary hyperoxaluria with fresh insights into the discovery of gene-specific pharmacological therapies of the future.
