Description

World Environment Day, held on 5 June every year, is a global United Nations Environment Programme sponsored awareness-raising day that promotes and encourages the concept of pledging time and resources to benefit the environment at a local level. Brunel University is holding its first WED this year, to raise the profile of environmental issues amongst staff, students and visitors, and to encourage us all to think about ways in which we as individuals, and as a community, can reduce our negative impact on the environment.

The following programme will run from 11am-3pm, as follows:-

THE ACADEMYRecycling Exhibition
Awareness raising of recycling opportunities across campus; facilities to recycle mobile phones, paper, toner cartridges, computing equipment….Start recycling today: use WED as an opportunity to spring clean the office, get rid of unnecessary paper and commit to reducing paper use. Paper recycling facilities will be introduced into all campus buildings and the paper collected that day will be weighed, and trees/shrubs will be planted to represent the amount of paper collected.

Recycling of organic waste now takes place on campus and there will be a demonstration of shredding, and food composting.

Travel Exhibition
· To launch the NEW staff Interest Free Cycle loan.
· To promote cycling by way of installing new staff cycle lockers for the entire bike in June.
· Display of the cycle routes around the campus. (Copies will be available to take away).
· Information on “Cutting your car use”, information about bus routes serving the campus, and the staff Interest Free Season Ticket loan.

Cycle Event
Basic cycle maintenance. Encouragement for staff to think about using more sustainable ways to travel to campus.
