Description

I discuss how comparative and computational musicology can be adopted in a post-hoc analysis of legendary cellists’ performances on record. By comparatively analysing performances amongst the teacher-student lineage, I aim to discover the origin of particular performance styles and/or their evolutionary process. Using computational tools, I measure and analyse performance parameters, such as tempo and dynamic modifications at the levels at which expert performance operates, and I critically review available tools as a musicology user end of digital music research. As a case study, I consider the styles of Jacqueline Du Pre (whose teachers include Pleeth, Casals, Tortelier, Gendron and Rostropovich) and Mischa Maisky (who studied with Piatigorsky and Rostropovich) focusing on their renditions of Brahms’ Cello Sonata in F major, Op.99, Adagio affettuoso in comparison to Casals’, Piatigorsky’s and Rostropovich’s.
