Description

(Intrinsic) biharmonic maps are the critical points of a second order functional for maps between Riemannian manifolds. At a first glance, this looks like a typical variational problem, but when we want to apply methods from the calculus of variations, we face a number of difficulties caused by the structure of the functional. We discuss an approach to reconcile the methods from the calculus of variations with the structure of the problem, using tools from geometric measure theory.
