This course is for anyone, from established researchers who need to prepare for a possible grilling on Newsnight, to students who would like to learn the secrets of communicating concisely and effectively with non-specialists. The techniques covered here apply to interviews with both print and broadcast media and are also useful for job interviews.
This workshop uses practical exercises to develop confidence and experience in handling media interviews, starting with tips for preparation, then covering how to get your message across and interact effectively with an interviewer, including how to deal with difficult or hostile questioning. The course is taught by professional science journalists who also have considerable experience as interviewees.
Workshop topics include:
> Understanding the different types, contexts and formats of media interviews
> Principles of effective communication to non-specialist audiences
> Tips for successful preparation
> Opportunities and risks of live vs recorded interviews
