Description
This one-day Workshop will be held at the BIS Headquarters on Thursday 29 March 2007 (one day later than originally planned). It will deal with the topics indicated in the original Spaceflight announcement, which is quoted below. The aim is to produce a brief position paper for submission to BNSC.
The success of recent missions to comets and asteroids and the launch of the New Horizons spacecraft to Pluto, and a possible first KBO encounter, mark important steps in the comprehensive study of the earliest stages of solar system evolution, planetary formation and the origin of life. Such long time span missions pose new demands on scientific means and technological requirements. Growing restrictions on budget appropriations make it necessary to contain costs and achieve the maximum return from each project, so it is desirable that a strong forward momentum is maintained in planning the implementation of an ongoing unmanned scientific exploration programme. This Workshop will provide an opportunity to look at options for the development of new methods and techniques for achieving extended more complete studies of individual satellites of the giant planets, as well as comets, centaurs, dwarf planets and KBOs.
Submissions for contributions are invited for consideration under the following broad subject headings or other relevant topics:
> Mission design
> Means for distant exploration
> Instruments
> Satellite studies
> Search for life beneath ice in the outer soar system
> “Life-time long” future exploration of outer limits of the solar system
- Registration required:
- Yes
- Free:
- No
