This is a free workshop to showcase the existing joint projects between the communities typically funded by BBSRC and PPARC, and to examine other potential areas for collaborative research. At the workshop, PPARC and the BBSRC are to announce details of a new joint funding call, consisting of funds to the value of GBP 1 million. This call aims to fund projects, slightly larger than the usual mini-PIPSS scheme, over a 12 month period.

In October 2005, a PPARC/BBSRC synergy meeting was held to generate cross-discipline projects where challenges to biological research, in the area of imaging and image analysis, could be countered by the application of existing technologies and know-how from the particle physics and astronomy community. This workshop generated 9 projects, with funding, from the IBIS programme, totalling in excess of GBP 950k.

In recognition of the continuing interest in the area of Bio-imaging and image analysis, a follow-up workshop is being held at the Institute of Physics in London. This meeting is intended to examine the progress made in the earlier projects and generate new partnerships in a wider community. This is an opportunity for networking with scientists from other institutions and disciplines. We particularly hope that joint grant applications are a positive outcome from this workshop. In this regard, BBSRC and PPARC will announce a special mini-PIPSS call for proposals for small research projects (ie funding for up to one years duration) to allow the communities to take advantage of cross disciplinary collaborations to address problems relevant to the remit of BBSRC. The primary aim of providing funding through this small grants scheme is to allow the development of preliminary data which may lead on to the submission of more substantial grant applications to BBSRC in due course. The applications made to this scheme will be subject to peer review. Full details of how to apply for the funds will be given at the
