Description

The twin concerns of climate change and urban development are expected to create significant challenges for the maintenance of an adequate water supply for domestic, industrial and environmental needs in the short as well as longer term. As water resources are stretched demand management can provide some benefit but, to maintain adequate supplies in the future, there is a need to consider more efficient use of water before returning it to the environment as well as examining alternative sources.

This mission visited Singapore and Australia to investigate the regulatory, standards and technological needs of wastewater recycling, reuse and other development processes and applications. Specific aims of the mission included:
> Review the process technologies and the mechanisms for the reuse of municipal wastewater
> Assess the development of new resources for public and industrial uses
> Consider the development of regulations for water reuse and recycling
> Review the public consultation exercises and public acceptability of new resources, especially the recirculation of municipal wastewater indirectly into public water resources
> Review costs and benefits taking the Water Framework Directive into consideration.

The mission’s findings will be discussed through a series of presentations from the mission team and attendees will get the opportunity to pose questions during panel discussions. A full written report of the mission’s findings will also be made available to all attending delegates. The provisional programme and full list of speakers are provided on the conference website.

Additional information

DTI Global Watch Missions are visits by small UK groups of technical experts, drawn from industry and academia, to leading-edge technology organisations around the world. Missions offer direct access to the people, technologies and strategies that are driving progress overseas in the sectors of:
> Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (ITEC)
> Life Sciences (LS)
> Performance Engineering and Materials (PEM)
> Environmental and Sustainable Energy Technologies (ESET)

By visiting key organisations in a particular country or region, missions can offer the opportunity to:
> access technology, knowledge and connections not available in the UK
> identify technology opportunities and organisations in overseas markets
> network and share best practice

The findings and recommendations following each mission are detailed in a report and are presented at a free one-day seminar. To find out more or to register for this DTI Global Watch Mission Seminar, please contact Louisa Quilter on 01664 565084.
