Description
The Rockefeller University invites you to join us on
Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.
for the presentation of The Pearl Meister Greengard Prize
An International Award Recognizing Outstanding Women in Biomedical Science
2009 Recipient
Suzanne Cory, Ph.D., F.R.S.
Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research
Melbourne, Australia
Suzanne Cory is a renowned geneticist and pioneering scientific leader.
The first woman to serve as director of Australia’s prestigious Walter and
Eliza Hall Institute, she held the post from 1996 to July 2009. Research by
Dr. Cory has yielded key insights in immunology and cancer biology. She
and her colleagues made important contributions to the understanding
of antigen receptor assembly in the immune system cells known as B
lymphocytes, and helped to elucidate how abnormal chromosome
rearrangements can lead to cancer. Dr. Cory and associates further
broadened the molecular understanding of cancer through studies of
cell‐death mechanisms that normally protect against tumors.
Dr. Cory is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, a Companion in
the Order of Australia, a foreign member of the U.S. National Academy of
Sciences, and a fellow of Great Britain’s Royal Society, which awarded her
its Royal Medal. She was recently named a Knight of the French Legion of
Honor.

“The discrimination of 25 years
ago is reflected in the relatively
few women at the top today.
I hope to bring more attention
to the work of brilliant women
scientists—perhaps this will
bring them further recognition,
and even a Nobel.”
—Paul Greengard
Dr. Paul Greengard, Nobel
Laureate and Vincent Astor
Professor at The Rockefeller
University, established the Pearl
Meister Greengard Prize in
memory of his mother.
