London scientists: introduce yourselves here
Matt Brown

Hello, I’m Matt the community leader for the London hub of Nature Network.
One of the purposes of the hub is to get local scientists interacting, swapping ideas and making new contacts. So please say hello here and introduce yourself.

Hi, I’m Stephen and am that (apparently) rare thing, a blogging prof. I am interested in finding out…
…when Matt is going to show some true leadership and organise a pub night.

Hello, I am Maxine and I am a….camp follower of science. I’m an ex-biophysicist, who worked on muscle crossbridges many years ago. But for a long time, I’ve been an editor of various types at Nature. I also represent the viewpoint of authors and peer-reviewers within Nature Publishing Group.
I feel a bit of a charlatan, answering Matt’s post, but mainly I wanted to add my 2 cents’ to Stephen’s request for a pub night! (A Dutch pub night in London!)

I’m a charlatan also and go by the name of Andreas. I’d like to join Stephen and Maxine in asking for a pub night, whose wide spacing I’ve deplored before. Their corresponding close proximity in reciprocal space has led to frequent encounters with Stephen, but I’d like to see a traditional, real-space pub night again.
I noticed today a striking multiplicity of NN members’ affiliations. For example, there is Imperial College, Imperial College London, Imperial College, London and Imperial College, Londn. It’s probably similar for other institutions and makes networking harder because you might not find who you’re looking for. Could these be consolidated?

Hello I’m Emma and I am a chemist but am now looking for artists or writers or some other creative types to collaborate with to make some sort of artwork. I am also looking for ‘public engagement in science’ activities to get involved with and am starting to do bits and bobs of freelance writing and editing work. Would be great to make some lovely new contacts and have a drink with you all soon. Cheers!

Hi, I’m Jodie and I received my MRes from UCL in Evolutionary Genetics in 2007 but have been away from the scientific community since then (for various reasons, mainly that I needed a break). However now I would like to find a job in the field and dont know how to even begin, seeing as I have not been part of a network since I left UCL. I am eager to get back into the scientific community, even if just to make contact with people with similar interests as me. Am I in the right place? Any suggestions for what to do next? Thanks…

Hiya Jodie. Thanks for saying hello. You’re absolutely in the right place. You might be interested to hear that we’re doing another scientists in a pub meetup next month. These are really informal events, with no speeches or presentations. Just lots of London scientists mingling over a beer or two. Hope to meet you there.

Andreas – this has been raised before here and I’m sure I’ve seen it elsewhere too. Hopefully it will be resolved.

Hello – I’m new to this site and wondering how many researchers working in London were actually born here? Cockneys don’t have a very intellectual reputation but is that fair? Tracey

I believe we have a pub night! 25 March, is that right Matt?
Maybe, Matt, we should organise another pub night to coincide with Pam’s visit? That would be fun.
