DESCRIPTION:The Coral Reef Crisis: Addressing the Threats of Global Warming
  and Ocean Acidification.
\n
\nPublic Presentation: 6th July 2009 (15:30 -1
 7.00) at the Royal Society
\n
\nby Professor J.E.N. Veron
\n
\nWith introd
 uction by Sir David Attenborough
\n
\nCommunicating the danger of major eco
 system collapse
\n
\nCoral reefs are directly impacted by the synergistic
effects of global warming and ocean acidification and are likely to be plac
ed into a situation of irreversible decline if immediate steps are not take
n to reduce CO2 emissions. In December 2009\, Parties of the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be meeting in Copenha
gen to discuss and hopefully agree to greenhouse gas emission reduction tar
gets. The scientific community has a critical role to play in informing the
decision makers involved in the UNFCCC talks about the level of greenhouse
gas emissions cuts required to avoid the most severe impacts of climate ch
 ange and ocean acidification.
\n
\nProfessor J.E.N Veron is the former Chie
f Scientist of the Australian Institute of Marine Science and widely regard
ed as the world’s leading authority on coral reef ecosystems. He has extens
ively researched the highly synergistic threats posed to coral reef ecosyst
ems by global warming and ocean acidification. Professor Veron will summari
se these threats and the action he believes is essential at Copenhagen this
  December.
\n
\nThis presentation will be followed by a summary of the fin
dings and recommendations of a Technical Expert Workshop held earlier in th
 e day.
\nLocation: The Royal Society\, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace\, London\,
SW1Y 5AG (HUlink to mapUH) HUhttp://royalsociety.org/UH The nearest tube
station is Piccadilly Circus (5 minutes)\, Charing Cross (10 minutes) and V
 ictoria (20 minutes).
\n
\nThis event is being organised by the Internatio
nal Programme on the State of the Ocean\, the Royal Society\, and the Zoolo
 gical Society of London.
\n
\nPlease note seats are not reserved unless pr
ior arrangements have been made with HUaylin.mcnamara@zsl.orgUH. Doors open
