Curious about the effect of sound? How does music trigger powerful emotional experiences when we listen to it? If we can understand this, is it possible to enhance both our responses to listening to music and the expressivity of performers?

Conductor Christopher Gayford has been working with music psychologists, including Dr Jane Ginsborg, to tackle these questions and develop new techniques for those who listen and perform. After carrying out research with students at Trinity College of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, they are now running an on-line music lab of mass-participation experiments and surveys at www.feelingsound.net.

Come and take part in some of the music lab surveys at this event, and be there as the first results from the mass-participation experiments are revealed. Enjoy a performance of a new work by composer Peter Salem by the Martindale String Quartet, when you will get a chance to put some of the Feeling Sound techniques into practice.

The evening also includes the announcement of the results of a survey to find the UK’s favourite chord. Composer Peter Salem will be writing the chord into a new piece for the Martindale Quartet, which will be premiered during this evening of practical tips and live performance to enhance your experience of listening to music of all types.
