 ttle is best known for her striking portraits of women who are innovators i
 n their various professions. Her latest commission covers six of Britain's 
 leading women surgeons. Inspired by the French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominiq
 ue Ingres (1780-1867)\, her portraits echo the conventions of formal portra
 iture to prompt the viewer to consider how subjects for institutional portr
 ait collections are chosen and who might have been missing from the faces o
 n the wall.
