DESCRIPTION:Concourse (2) by Barbara Hepworth
\n
\nPainted in the year in w
hich the NHS was founded\, Concourse (2) embodies the idea of social cohesi
on which underpinned the social reforms of the post-war era. Hepworth later
said that the harmonious composition of the painting stemmed from the ‘pur
pose and co-ordination’ of the surgeons and nurses in the operating theatre
 .
\n
\nIt is one of several paintings of surgical operations made by Hepwor
th between 1947 and 1949. They were the result of a collaboration between t
he artist and the surgeon Norman Capener (1898-1975)\, who worked at the Pr
incess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital in Exeter.
\n
\nOn display as part of
the NHS 60 exhibition in the Qvist Gallery at the Hunterian Museum.
\n
