Description
Concourse (2) by Barbara Hepworth
Painted in the year in which the NHS was founded, Concourse (2) embodies the idea of social cohesion which underpinned the social reforms of the post-war era. Hepworth later said that the harmonious composition of the painting stemmed from the ‘purpose and co-ordination’ of the surgeons and nurses in the operating theatre.
It is one of several paintings of surgical operations made by Hepworth between 1947 and 1949. They were the result of a collaboration between the artist and the surgeon Norman Capener (1898-1975), who worked at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital in Exeter.
On display as part of the NHS 60 exhibition in the Qvist Gallery at the Hunterian Museum.
