When asked in surveys, a sizeable proportion of Europeans and Americans consistently report believing that astrology is ‘scientific’. Why might this be? In this paper I explore, and test empirically, some possible explanations underlying variation in the extent of such beliefs amongst European publics. These include science literacy, semantic ambiguity, political values and personality.
