Description

Drop-in object handling

Illness in the 18th century could be a dangerous thing. Using objects from the Museum’s collections, discover how people stayed in good health, find out about common ailments and cures, and learn about the common causes of death, as well as the more bizarre ones! Objects that will be displayed in the new Capital City galleries will be used in this workshop, including false teeth, a rare toothbrush, pots and bottles for ointments, spectacles and Bills of Mortality (lists of statistics for different causes of death). The talk will focus on explaining the uses of different medical items by ordinary people in the 18th Century. It can also cover common diseases at that time, and the main causes of death. It will also be a good forum to answer visitor’s questions on the subject as well as the Capital City project.
