Description

This session offers a private viewing of some of the Museum’s most fascinating and decorative cartographic treasures.

The items specially brought together for this event show how, at this period of English imperial ambition, cartography encouraged exploration and aided navigation. Charts were used not only for planning voyages and naval operations but also for celebrating them. See for yourself maps identical to those that inspired Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare and Sir Francis Drake more than 500 years ago.

With Gillian Hutchinson, Curator of the History of Cartography, National Maritime Museum and
Brian Thynne, Curator of Hydrography, National Maritime Museum.
