Description

This seminar will describe research undertaken to evaluate and map vulnerability to volcanic hazards on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Traditional volcanic vulnerability assessments focus on the physical vulnerability of buildings to damage and collapse. This research takes a different approach in getting decision makers from two volcanically active Caribbean islands to choose vulnerability factors, with a particular emphasis on the vulnerability of people. GIS will be used as a tool to analyse the spatial variation of vulnerability and risk across the island, and a number of different maps will be produced that can be evaluated by the users, with the objective of determining the most appropriate visualisation of volcanic vulnerability and risk for decision makers.
