Description
_Illustrating Antarctica’s majestic natural beauty & documenting preparations for Scott’s doomed 1910 South Pole journey. _
The Scott to the Pole exhibition returns to the Society for International Polar Year.
Images, mostly taken by the photographer Herbert Ponting who was the ‘camera-artist’ on the expedition, depict famous scenes, accompanied by commentary from modern polar travellers, scientists and relatives of Scott’s team.
Ponting’s images offer a poignant glimpse of expedition life: from Antarctica’s icy beauty to the men relaxing on deck, from landscape surveying to an impromptu hair cut – the exhibition captures intimate, everyday moments providing an absorbing diary that completes the familiar and well documented story for the race to reach the South Pole.
