Paul Keim has pioneered methods to characterize strains of genetically uniform bacterial pathogens – particularly the major BW agents – and was involved in investigations of the anthrax letters in 2001, the 1993 anthrax release by the Japanese Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult, and the Sverdlovsk incident in the former Soviet Union.
