Description
This talk will describe the principles of ultrafast lasers and their application to biomedical imaging. In particular it will describe fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM), which can be thought of as a kind of flash photography on picosecond timescales and is used to study the behaviour of molecules in order to understand their environment and interactions. By identifying particular molecular species, it can help diagnose disease such as cancer and can be used to study signalling mechanisms in cells that underlie the transmission and spread of disease. This interdisciplinary approach to science, combining the latest advances in laser technology with biological and medical techniques, is increasingly important for today’s science.
