This meeting will outline some of the current issues in elephant health and welfare and speakers will include experts from Thailand and Sri Lanka.

The Asian elephant is an endangered species that has had an important role in the history of Asian civilizations.

Today elephants are still important at ceremonial events but they also represent a significant form of animal agriculture. This is a component of the complex environmental balance involved in the maintenance of remaining fragmented forests and vulnerable wild elephant populations.

Little is known about the health, breeding and genetics of the domesticated elephants, knowledge that is crucial to maintaining elephant health and wellbeing through early diagnosis of disease and genetic exchanges between the small populations that are dispersed among the elephant camps and in zoos.

This meeting will outline some of the current issues in elephant health and welfare and speakers will include experts from Thailand and Sri Lanka.
